A man is in hospital with life-threatening injuries after he was shot by police in a Markham, Ont., condominium early Wednesday morning following a reported dispute, the province’s police watchdog said.
York Region police said they responded to a welfare check call on Buchanan Drive at around 4:40 a.m. When officers arrived, they found a male who was “actively attacking” a female, police allege.
The Special Investigations Unit, which responds when police have been involved in a death or injury, said someone within an apartment building called police after hearing a dispute from another unit.
The SIU said officers entered the unit and one of them shot the man shortly after.
“The nature of the interaction is under investigation. All I can tell you at this point in time is that police heard sounds coming from outside of the unit,” SIU spokesperson Monica Hudon said at a press conference Wednesday.
Early information shows the woman had stab wounds, Hudon said. She added the SIU is still working to identify the man and woman.
“At this time, I don’t know the relationship between the individuals,” Hudon said.
Both people were taken to hospital, Hudon said. The man is in critical, life-threatening condition while the woman is in stable condition, she said.
Hudon said the SIU has assigned three investigators and three forensic investigators to the case.
